Goli Baje

Another famous food in Udupi, Goli Baje is a snack item. Made out of rice flour, maida, curd, ginger and green chillies, Gole Baje is a savoury Udupi delicacy. It is a deep-fried snack, which is crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Perfect to be enjoyed as a tea-time snack, Goli Baje can also be served with a side of pudina, tomato or onion chutney.

 Mangalore buns

Sweet and savoury, Mangalore buns are the best food in Udupi and cannot be compared to your usual bread buns. Mangalore buns are a deep-fried Udupi food item, which is similar to kachoris, but have a unique and distinct taste to them. Mangalore buns are prepared from overripe bananas, which gives it the one-of-a-kind, subtly sweet taste. Served as the best breakfast in Udupi, Mangalore buns can be had with an accompaniment of chutney, or even with a glass of milk.

The Best Udupi Food

They have two offerings, unlimited meals served on a banana leaf and a limited portion thali served on a plate. The dishes change everyday and the food is cooked fresh everyday. The unlimited meals served on a banana leaf has three types of vegetables. On the day I’d gone, they were serving an aloo (potato) vatana (white peas), Madras cucumber curry, a dry preparation of Gawar (cluster beans), steamed rice, puri, sambar, rasam, dal, yoghurt (homemade, set in a small steel bowl) and pickle. The dessert was a choice of three – gulab jamun, shrikhand and the seasonal aamras (homemade mango pulp). You’re allowed only one dessert, but one does wish for more. There’s always space for an extra dessert.

The three curries were delicious. Homestyle Udupi food with no extra frills. Just pure flavour. The aloo vatana was a simple preparation, mildly spiced yet delicious. I’m not the biggest fan of the Madras Cucumber, but Ramanayak aces the preparation with this vegetable. Gawar is a difficult vegetable to cook as it’s a very hard bean, but the version here was superb. The sambar was unlike the regular sweet-thickish Udupi sambar that one finds everywhere in Bombay. Simple yet tasty. Ramanayak also serves a chase (butter milk) drink as part of the meal. A much needed drink to counter the Bombay heat and humidity in summers.

Udupi Rasoi is iconically famous for its traditional South Indian breakfast, making those dishes a must-try. One of the dishes that stands out, though, is Uthappam. It’s light and mouth-melting, and when paired with filter coffee, you have the perfect breakfast. If you want to enjoy North Indian street food, Udupi Rasoi is the best veg restaurant in Mangalore and in Udupi to try it out. The Dahi Puri here is just the perfect solution for all your snack cravings.
